ICO issues written warning to UK websites over cookie consent policies

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has warned companies running the UK’s most visited websites that they may face enforcement action if they fail to make cookie changes to comply with data protection law.

Under UK data protection and privacy law, companies must give users fair choices over whether or not to be tracked through the use of cookies. The ICO has previously issued guidance to encourage companies to make it as easy for users to “Reject All” cookies as it is to “Accept All”. Despite this, the ICO has found that some websites still do not provide users with clear choices regarding the use of cookies.
